Suzie's Story
Following a road traffic accident in 1988, Suzie, now 40, suffered an acquired brain injury (ABI) which left her in a coma for six months. So critical were Suzie's injuries that she later had to undergo more than 15 operations and was told she would never walk again.
Before joining the Trust nine years ago, Suzie had moved from one care agency to another – all unable to provide Suzie with the support and motivation she needed.
Suzie's current support worker, Toni, said: "When Suzie first joined the Trust she wouldn't leave her own home and found it difficult to get on with the people who were there to support and help her.
"At the Trust we recognise the importance of finding the right balance between a client's personality and those of our staff – and it's not always an easy fit."
Suzie, who lives independently in her own home, with 24 hours support from the Trust, now enjoys shopping, travelling to Scotland to visit family, attending art and cookery courses, and has even tried archery.
Having been told she would never walk, Suzie can now confidently move around with a walking frame and is able to complete household tasks such as cooking and cleaning.
With the encouragement of the Trust, Suzie has completed a Return to Work course at the Christian Concern Centre in Crewe and has now got a job at the Disability Information Bureau in Congleton for a few hours each week.
Suzie said about the Trust: "They have opened my world. I am no longer afraid to try new things."
