David's Story
David, 52, has been with the Trust for over ten years after suffering an acquired brain injury (ABI) when he fell down the stairs. After the accident David, who had coped with several struggles in his personal life, spent over a year in hospital and respite care.
Arriving at the Trust with just the clothes on his back, the Trust has helped David rebuild his life. A keen swimmer with 17 swimming certificates to his name, David is also an active member of the community – he cleans the windows at the Purple Onion, helps maintain the gardens for several of the Trust's larger houses and is always ready to help if any odd jobs need doing.
David has also worked on the David Attenborough Conservation schemes in Northwich, Congleton and Widnes, helping to clean tow paths and lay down stone chippings.
Living in a shared house in Crewe, David receives 24 hour support from the Trust. Whilst preferring to live with others, David regularly goes to the shops on his own and is fiercely independent when it comes to housework doing the ironing, washing up, cooking, hoovering and cleaning.
David said: "The Trust is very good. I would be a lot worse off without them and I am grateful to all the people for helping me."
