With the General Election just round the corner, The Lady Verdin Trust has run a series of 'Election Workshops' to help encourage greater participation amongst adults with learning disabilities.

The Election Workshops were organised to help educate and inform people about democracy and politics, why it is important and how to take part.

In the 2005 General Election, 80% of adults with learning disabilities were registered, however only 16% actually used their vote – compared to 61% in the general population.

Thalia Morris, Community Service Director at Lady Verdin Trust, said: "We want to make the democratic process more accessible for adults with learning disabilities and help them have more of a say in the political decisions that affect their lives.

"Many of our clients tell us that there is little information to help them understand how politics works, how it affects them and how they can get involved."

The sessions were held at the Purple Onion, Breedon House, 249-251 Edleston Road, Crewe on Thursday 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd April at 2pm-3pm or 6pm-7pm.
